A National Minimum Wage Commission has been established in order to review and recommend on the adjustment of the national minimum wage. The first adjustment took place on 1 March 2020 where the minimum wage was adjusted to R15.57 for domestic workers. The second adjustment took place on 1 March 2021 where the minimum wage was adjusted to R19.09 for domestic workers. Further adjustments are expected annually.
Employers who pay the bare minimum in terms of the National Minimum Wage Act must therefore be aware of the fact that the national minimum wage will be increased regularly and must be prepared to increase wages accordingly.
